Chief Technology Officer

Steve Nichols, Ph.D., serves as chief technology officer for the state of Georgia.  Since he joined GTA in 2002, Nichols has played a key role in several important initiatives to modernize the state’s IT infrastructure.  Among major projects are relocation of the state data center; an upgrade of the state’s wide area network; a contract to provide Voice over IP services to state agencies; and an upgrade of PeopleSoft. He helped to design program requirements and evaluate applications for Wireless Communities Georgia, Gov. Sonny Perdue’s initiative to help Georgia cities develop high-speed networks.

Before coming to GTA, Nichols was a principal consultant at Daugherty Systems (now Daugherty Business Solutions) in Atlanta, where he provided technical leadership and strategic advice on enterprise-wide software architectures.  Previously, Nichols worked for Cemax-Icon, which develops software for medical imaging and archiving.  He holds a bachelor of science in applied physics, a master of science in physics and a Ph.D. in physics, all from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
