GTA Leadership
Steve Nichols
As Chief Technology Officer for the state of Georgia, Dr. Nichols advises GTA leadership and state agencies on technology issues. Since he joined GTA in 2002, he has played a key role in several important initiatives to modernize the state’s IT infrastructure. Among major projects were the relocation of the state data center; an upgrade of the state’s wide area network; and an upgrade of the state's enterprise PeopleSoft financial and human resources systems. He helped to design program requirements and evaluate applications for Wireless Communities Georgia, Governor Sonny Perdue’s initiative to help Georgia cities develop high-speed broadband networks. He participated in the assessment of the state's IT enterprise in 2007 and the resulting procurement in 2008, which led to the transition of enterprise IT and managed network services to IBM and AT&T respectively.
Before coming to GTA, he was a principal consultant at Daugherty Systems (now Daugherty Business Solutions) in Atlanta, where he provided technical leadership and strategic advice on enterprise-wide software architectures. Previously, Dr. Nichols worked for Cemax-Icon, which develops software for medical imaging and archiving. He holds a bachelor of science in applied physics, a master of science in physics and a Ph.D. in physics, all from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
