Georgia Agencies Urge Caution During Memorial Day Travel
May 22, 2005
With the first summer holiday around the corner, the Department of Motor Vehicle Safety (DMVS) and the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) again urge motorists to plan extra time during Memorial Day travel in anticipation of heavier than normal traffic.
The 2005 Memorial Day Holiday covers a period of 78 hours beginning at 6 pm Friday, May 27th, and ending at midnight, Monday, May 30th. In an effort to increase awareness of the danger of travel accidents during this time, the DMVS estimates that 2,550 accidents will occur throughout the state, resulting in 650 injuries and 17 fatalities.
DMVS Commissioner James R. (Jim) Davis advises drivers to get enough sleep before attempting long drives. "Alcohol also intensifies sleepiness, so please do not drink and drive under any circumstances," he said.
According to the DMVS Accident Reporting Division, 18 people were killed and 707 others were injured in the 2,654 crashes that law enforcement responded to during last year's 78-hour holiday travel period. One of those killed was riding a motorcycle, one was riding a mini-bike with no helmet, and one fatality was a pedestrian. Twelve of the victims were not using safety equipment. Seven of the 11 fatalities were alcohol/drug related.
GSP Commander Bill Hitchens reminds motorists to use extra care during their holiday travels. "Allow yourself ample time to reach your destination and drive defensively," he said. "Obey the posted speed limit, don't drink and drive, and make sure everyone is properly restrained no matter how short the trip."
