RSS FAQ

What is RSS?
RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication." It is a way to easily distribute a list of headlines, update notices, and media to an audience of users. An RSS feed is used by an RSS Reader that organizes headlines and notices for easy reading.

What are RSS Feeds?
An RSS Feed is a document containing a listing of a website's new content. This document is updated when new content is published to the site. Feeds are gathered and read by RSS feed readers (also called aggregators).

What is an RSS Feed Reader?
RSS readers "subscribe" to RSS feed, which means they download lists of content at an interval that the user specifies (every 30 minutes, for example). All RSS feeds have a link back to the website, so if the user sees new content of interest, they can easily be taken to the website to view the respective information.

Why RSS?
RSS Feeds allow you to easily check if there is new content on the site that you keep up with on a regular basis. You just need to subscribe to the appropriate RSS feed and the information can be retrieved automatically at regular intervals or instantly with the touch of a button.

How can I use RSS?
RSS is simple to use. All you need is a Feed Reader and the location of a few feeds to get started. There are many free readers available now and in some cases there might be one built into your browser. Commercial Feed Readers are also available for users who might want a few more features. Once you have selected a reader you will be required to tell it the URL of the feed you want to subscribe to. Some readers can automatically detect feeds.

Which Feed Reader should I use?
To get started we recommend Awasu or Sharpreader. For a in-browser feed reader try Sage for Mozilla or Pluck for Internet Explorer. All these readers are free and easy to use.
