GA Requires More CDL Requirements

May 30, 2006

JULY BRINGS NEW REQUIREMENTS FOR GEORGIA
COMMERCIAL DRIVERS LICENSE (CDL) HOLDERS AND APPLICANTS

Beginning July 1st, all drivers applying for or renewing a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) in Georgia must complete the Highway Watch(r) safety and security program, a mandatory safety awareness and anti-terrorism training program.  After completing training, drivers will receive a Highway Watch(r) Identification Card that they will need to present to the Department of Driver Services (DDS) when applying for an initial CDL or upon renewing their CDL.

Highway Watch(r) began in 1998 as a safety awareness program for CDL drivers and since Spring 2002 includes anti-terrorism training.  This training is fully funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and is available at no cost to the CDL holder.  The program takes approximately one hour, and a number of options including live classes, DVDs, VHS tapes, and audio CD's are available for the training.  The training is a one-time only requirement.

"We applaud Governor Perdue and the General Assembly for this new effort in keeping our state and country safe and secure," says DDS Commissioner Greg Dozier.  "We will continue to offer the best customer service to assist CDL holders as they comply with this policy to safeguard our homeland," he added.

Training materials and more information are available by calling the Georgia Motor Trucking Association (GMTA) at (770) 444-9771 or by visiting the Highway Watch (r) website at www.highwaywatch.com or the Georgia Motor Trucking Association website at www.gmta.org.
