Collect child support

Jun 20, 2002

The Georgia Child Support Enforcement program works to benefit children by enforcing the parental responsibility to pay financial assistance.

By doing this, it hopes to promote and ensure family self-sufficiency and stability along with reducing the public burden of supporting abandoned children.

This program coordinates the collection and distribution of the payments, and handles collection of spousal support only when included in an order for child support where the child hasn't been emancipated.

All payments must be sent to the Family Support Registry of the enforcement program. Upon receipt of payments, they are posted and checks are usually issued within two or three business days.

In 2000, the registry processed 3.2 million items and $300 million in support.

Georgians can access payment information 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling the automated hotline at (404) 657-2780 or 1-800-227-7993.

The program's website offers more information about applying to collect child support, its policies, procedures and who to contact for questions. Visit www.cse.dhr.state.ga.us.
