Home School My Child
Before deciding to home school their children, Georgians must know the state's requirements.
Parents or guardians wishing to home school their children must have a high school diploma or a G.E.D. Tutors hired to teach the children are required to have a high school diploma or a G.E.D.
Parents or guardians must submit a Declaration of Intent to Utilize a Home Study Program to the superintendent of the local school system in which the program is located by September 1 or within 30 days of when a program is established. The declaration must include the names and ages of the students, the location of the program, and the dates of the school year.
The program must include reading instruction, language arts, math, social studies and science. The school year must include 180 days, with at least 4.5 hours per day, and monthly attendance reports must be sent to the superintendent.
Students are subject to taking national standardized tests at least every three years, starting at the end of third grade. In addition, instructors must write annual progress reports for each student in each of the required subjects.
