File taxes online
Jun 20, 2002
The Department of Revenue Web site contains links to software companies that offer on-line filing, including companies that offer free filing under certain circumstances.
Taxpayers have two options for filing their returns electronically. They can file from a personal computer using approved software, or they can have their returns transmitted by a registered Electronic Return Originator (ERO). An ERO is an individual who has obtained approval from the IRS to file returns electronically. Qualified taxpayers can also file their returns via telephone using the Federal/State TeleFile system.
With either electronic filing option, taxpayers can file their original state and federal returns together or separately. Taxpayers can also file multiple state returns in one transmission. In both instances, the federal return must be filed first. You should note that not all software supports state only or multiple state electronic filing.
If filing electronically, do not submit paper returns or other documentation. However, taxpayers should keep copies of tax returns and documents in the event they are needed. If additional tax is due, payment should be remitted with Form 525-TV. This form is available on the DOR website.
Taxpayers who file electronically can receive their refund within 21 days. They also have the option of having their refund deposited directly into their bank account, which is the quickest option to receive your refund from the Georgia Department of Revenue. Taxpayers can inquire about the status of their refund by calling 404-417-4470 or 1-800-338-2389. Also, refund inquiries can be submitted via e-mail. Before submitting an inquiry, please wait at least two weeks if the return was filed electronically and six weeks if a paper return was filed. Callers will need to provide the primary social security number and the exact dollar amount of the refund listed on their tax return.
