Special Investigations

Internal Affairs Unit

The Internal Affairs unit investigates allegations of misconduct made against Departmental members, the Capitol Police Services Section, as well as the misuse of radar speed-timing devices against any agency bearing the Department's certification.

Background Investigation Unit

The Background Investigation Unit is responsible for conducting background investigations for candidates seeking employment with the Department of Public Safety.

Polygraph Unit

The Polygraph Unit works closely with the Background Unit, also providing services to the Internal Affairs Unit. All polygraph examinations completed are in compliance with the Standard Operating Procedures of the Unit, which were revised during 2002 by polygraph personnel under Administrative and Accreditation Office Guidance. The revision included the addition of DVD audio-visual recorders to existing monitors to document all examinations. A program of field examination was continued to facilitate prospective employees by eliminating the necessity for applicants to travel to Atlanta. This concept was utilized when several examinees were identified in a limited geographical area. Field examinations are also used to better accommodate witnesses in Internal Affairs cases. Specialized instruction is provided in GSP Trooper School, the police academy, instructor training school, and the Internal APA seminar. These presentations establish professional contacts and gain positive input on existing procedures.

Permits Unit

The Permits Unit governs the statewide issuance of all Wholesale/Retail Firearms Licenses (required for businesses wishing to sell handguns under 15 inches in length), and the issuance of Speed Detection Device permits.
