ATLANTA (GA) – The Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of Aging Services’ GeorgiaCares SMP program is providing tips to Medicare beneficiaries on protecting themselves against identity theft and Medicare fraud. GeorgiaCares SMP provides health insurance counseling, as well as assistance with reporting and following up on Medicare fraud, abuse and error. GeorgiaCares toll-free number is 1-800-669-8387.

Fulton County DFCS hosts back-to-school fair for foster kids - Aug 4
On August 9, the Fulton County Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) will host a back-to-school community health fair for more than 1,300 foster children. The health fair will be at the Southwest DFCS Service Center at 515 Fairburn Road from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. This year’s event theme is "Growing Healthy Families" and is meant to enhance the personal, physical, material and nutritional readiness of every DFCS child and family as they return to school in August.
Department of Human Resources holds Public Budget Hearing - Aug 1
The Board of Human Resources, which oversees and sets policy for the Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR), will seek public input as the agency and its Board plan for the state fiscal year 2010 budget. In an effort to become more effective in its delivery of services, the Board of the Georgia Department of Human Resources will hold a budget hearing on August 5 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Helene S. Mills Senior Multipurpose facility at 515 John Wesley Dobbs Drive, Atlanta, GA 30312.
Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program starts in August - Aug 1
The Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Aging Services (DAS) has received approximately $250,000 in federal funds from the United States Department of Agriculture for this year's Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP). The Farmers' Market Program will run from August 11, 2008, to September 30, 2008.
GeorgiaCares SHIP program receives grant from CMS - Jul 30
GeorgiaCares State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) received a supplemental grant of more than $379,800 from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that must be used between June 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009. SHIP is a grantee program of CMS that is available to every state. GeorgiaCares is a program of the Department of Human Resources, Division of Aging Services (DAS).
DHR encourages older adults to get flu immunization - Jul 23
August is National Immunization Awareness Month and the Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Aging Services (DAS) is encouraging older adults to get immunized against the flu. The flu season, which typically runs from late fall until March, is responsible for an average of more than 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths each year in the United States.

DHR kicks off Georgia'a first Farmers Market to accept food stamps - Jul 17
ATLANTA – Today, the Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR) and a host of state and federal officials kicked off Georgia’s first farmers market to accept food stamps, a pilot project enabling families of low-income to have access to fresh produce and other foods. The pilot project is a collaboration including DHR’s Office of Financial Services and Division of Family and Children Services, East Atlanta Village Farmers Market, the Food and Nutrition Services of the United States Department of Agriculture and Georgia Organics. The East Village Farmers Market is one of four farmers markets participating in the pilot program throughout the state. Other markets are scheduled to open in Chatham, Wilkes and Walker counties.

Leaving children unattended in vehicles can be deadly - Jul 8
As temperatures begin to increase, the Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR), Division of Public Health, and the Safe Kids of Georgia community partners urge parents not to leave children unsupervised in vehicles for any length of time. It is important to remember that temperatures in your vehicle could spike to 160 degrees Fahrenheit on a hot and humid day within a matter of minutes – even with the windows partly open.
